Survival Tips For New Teachers by Mike Croom

Earlier this year at the Arkansas Music Educators Association conference, Mike Croom presented a clinic entitled “Survival Tips For New Teachers”.  The information included a calendar showing when you needed to have certain important tasks completed.  He also details a host of other information including recruiting beginners, concert band conducting, tuning, and rehearsal skills, marching band field placement, instrument repair tips, and places to find additional information.  Click to view the material from the presentation.

Mike Croom is the retired band director from Northside High School in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.  The content included in this article is courtesy of the ASBOA website.

Use Cable Ties for Quick Brace Repairs by Jerry Rowden

In the shop we see lots of loose braces on brass instruments that have been temporarily held together with tape.  The tape usually leaves a sticky residue that is often hard to remove.  I did some work for a drum corp recently and their solution was to bind loose braces together with cable ties.  They are inexpensive, easy to remove, leave no residue and are available at any hardware or home supply store.  Using cable ties instead of tape is a quick and easy repair technique that will help save on your repair bills.

Jerry Rowden is the Palen Music Center repair technician based in our Columbia location.  He has been with PMC since 2002.

Weekly Web Spotlight:  Online Music Flash Cards

Musicards is an ever-growing collection of highly-customizable online music theory flash cards. The free site includes note name recognition, key signatures, intervals, triads, piano and guitar note names, and an interactive program to aid your students in reading piano and guitar notation.  These music flashcards can be used by beginning music students who are becoming acquainted with key music rudiments, all the way up to intermediate and advanced students who wish to fill in gaps here and there or increase fluency with existing knowledge.
