Palen Music Center Quick Note

Monday, April 2, 2007

The PMC Quick Note is a weekly service provided to all area directors.  It is part of our mission to support the lives of band directors across the Midwest.  The weekly Quick Note contains helpful tips and suggestions from area directors, spotlights on area college and university band programs, calendars of upcoming events, advocacy articles promoting music education, links to helpful web resources, and much more.  Comments, suggestions, ideas, and articles are always welcome.

Click to watch the videoThe Making of a Flute (Wonderful video!)
Check out this really informative video on how a flute is made. It was put together by the Discovery Channel and is only five minutes long. You and your students will really enjoy this!
The Making of a Trumpet
Attached is a PDF copy of an article from a recent issue of the Conn-Selmer “InTune Magazine” describing how a trumpet is made.  The article features the crew at the Eastlake facility, outside of Cleveland.   The Eastlake facility produces all the Conn and King brass instruments as well as some Bach low brass and some of the Holton low brass instruments.  We hope you enjoy the article!
Feedback: An Ounce of Prevention
In response to last week's Quick Note by Jerry Rowden entitled "An Ounce of Prevention," Matt Fredrickson sent in the following repsonse:

I would add something to the valve caps comment……I use “O” rings from the plumber to put where the valve caps (on the bottom of the valve) meet the valve casing.  This helps to keep them from freezing up.  I also do this on the tuning slides where the inner slide goes into the outer slide. I hope this helps. --Matt Fredrickson
