Please note a change in date for the performance. It is now Monday, February 4th.

The Maniacal 4 Trombone Quartet will be performing at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri on Monday, February 4th at 7:30pm in the Ellis Recital Hall.  This event, hosted by trombone professor Jason Hausback, is free and open to the public, and is cosponsored by the Buffet Group USA, Missouri State University and Palen Music Center.

The Maniacal 4 is a professional trombone quartet which is starting to garner national and international attention for their unique mix of traditional chamber music with jazz, latin and rock music.  Most recently, they have performed at the 2012 International Trombone Festival in Paris, France, and have also performed at major conventions in Aarhus, Denmark and Belem, Brazil.  M4 performs its concerts almost exclusively from memory, projecting a “clear, unified, uplifting and committed musical vision on par with great CHAMBER ensembles.”  With all four members early in their musical careers, “M4 has the goods to become one of the finest trombone quartets performing today.”  Maniacal 4 is sponsored by the Buffet Group USA and performs exclusively on Antoine Courtois Paris trombones.

Woodwind Tuning Tips by Harlon Lamkin

Editor's note: This week, we are featuring a fantastic set of woodwind tuning tendancies and helpful hints. Below is a sample screenshot. To view the complete list of tips, print the PDF chart.

Harlon Lamkin was Director of Bands at Owasso High School in Oklahoma from 1973-1989.  During his tenure the band received superior ratings at every contest they attended.  They marched in the Rose Bowl Parade in 1985 and 1989 and won numerous concert band festivals throughout the United States.  They also consistently placed the highest number of students in the Oklahoma All-State band annually.  Mr. Lamkin passed away in 2006.  The Owasso Band tradition continues to this day led by David Gorham.  They have marched in 3 more Rose Bowl Parades,  been a BOA Grand National Finalist Band, a BOA Super Regional Grand Champion in St. Louis, performed twice at the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, and will march in the  St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland in March of 2014.
