Palen Music Center is dedicated to helping children experience excellence, personal growth, and joy through involvement in music. We carry out this mission by supporting area band directors through weekly service, support, educational programs, and quality products. This weekly Quick Note newsletter strives to highlight topics that are immediately helpful in the classroom. Comments, suggestions, ideas, and articles are always welcome.

Palen Music Center Welcomes Melissia Goff To Our Team!

Having seventeen former band directors on our staff wasn't quite enough....we needed one more. We are very fortunate to be part of an expanding business and growth cannot happen without having quality people. This summer, Melissia Goff will be joining our team as a full-time road representative working out of our headquarters store in Springfield. At PMC, our mission is to do everything in our power to support kids, and attracting strong, dedicated, caring teachers serving as road representatives helps accomplish that goal.

Melissia (yes there are two "i"s in her name) is currently teaching at Willard High School. She is a graduate of Willard, performed for years with the Phantom Regiment drum corp, graduated from Missouri State University and has teaching experience in Missouri, Illinois, and Nevada. She has achieved many things as a director including leading her marching band to the BOA Grand Nationals Semifinals and directing her concert band all the way to the Missouri Music Educators Association state convention.

If you would like to learn more about her, check out this great article that appeared in the April 2011 edition of Teaching Music. Melissia will be available to assist our partner schools with marching band clinics, concert band clinics, literature selection, assistance with recruiting, beginning band instrument testing, and much more. We look forward to adding another quality music educator with a servant's heart to our team. Welcome Melissia!

Brass Tuning Tips by Harlon Lamkin

Back in January, we featured an article by Harlon detailing some woodwind tuning tips. This article is the follow-up, with a chart of brass pitch tendencies. Click here for a printable PDF chart of brass tuning tips.

Harlon Lamkin was Director of Bands at Owasso High School in Oklahoma from 1973-1989. During his tenure the band received superior ratings at every contest they attended. They marched in the Rose Bowl Parade in 1985 and 1989 and won numerous concert band festivals throughout the United States. They also consistently placed the highest number of students in the Oklahoma All-State band annually.  The Owasso Band tradition continues to this day led by David Gorham. They have marched in 3 more Rose Bowl Parades, been a BOA Grand National Finalist Band, a BOA Super Regional Grand Champion in St. Louis, performed twice at the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, and will march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland in March of 2014.

Helpful Brass Articles by Paul Copenhaver

Editor's note: Paul was kind enough to pass along a couple of very helpful articles he put together for the Northeast Missouri Junior Honors Band Clinic. One article is on How To Properly Oil Piston Valves and one is on How To Clean Your Trumpet. Both are available in PDF format so you can hand them out to students. Thank you Paul!
